Matt surfaces have dominated the design world in recent decades; certainly in the realm of the kitchen, where laminate and wood have reigned. But flick through any interiors magazine and you'll spot laquered furniture, polished metals and nail varnish-glossy accessories are on the rise. On a personal front, we've also experienced a growing interest in glossy finishes, with noticeably more requests for them through our custom colour service. High-shine finishes seem to be in the spotlight.
First, the science. What is a gloss finish? In our product range (and generally within the powder coating system), we define a gloss finish as having a sheen level (which rates how reflective the surface is) of 80%, compared to a sheen level of around 20-30% on our standard, matt finishes.
So, how to choose between matt and gloss? Like all things when it comes to your home, it's a totally personal choice. Gloss finishes pack a serious punch when it comes to impact and drama. A little goes a long way, so going for glossy hardware will really elevate your kitchen and can look striking when contrasted against matt cabinetry. It's also much easier to clean as the surface is more polished and therefore harder for dirt or grease to penetrate. On the flip side, one thing to consider is that gloss finishes will potentially show finger marks more easily, depending on the colour and style. Meanwhile, matt finishes have a subtler, more classic look and are less prone to showing fingerprints and dirt.
